Betty Mkatshwa
Betty Mkatshwa is a competition lawyer admitted in South Africa and in Australia (NSW), with over 10 years of competition law experience. Betty joined the South African Competition Commission as a Senior Analyst in the Advocacy Division in October 2021 and has recently been seconded to the Commission’s Legal Services Division.
Betty is a former a competition and regulatory legal consultant at Gilbert + Tobin (Australia). Prior to that, Betty completed her articles of clerkship at ENSafrica in 2016, and later joined Webber Wentzel as an Associate.
In 2021, Betty has co-authored a research paper for the OECD’s Gender Inclusive Competition Policy Project. The paper explores how competition law can address gender inequality by sharing lessons from the South African competition policy perspective.
Betty has previously shared insights on the topic of competition policy, gender equality and public interest at various engagements organised by institution such as the OECD; UNCTAD, South African Competition Authorities; the South African Local Government Association; the American Bar Association; the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership; and the European Trade Union Confederation.

Between 2021 to 2023, Betty lead the Commission’s research project titled “Women in Business”, which lead to the Commission publishing a study on promoting effective entry and participation of women entrepreneurs in the South African economy: procompetitive principles for government and non-government stakeholders.
